MCC mourns David Kato

MCC

David Kato - Mourning, Prayer and Action

Dear Friends,

It was with shock and sadness that the leadership of MCC heard of the murder of David Kato, a human rights defender, a humanitarian and a man of tremendous heart and courage.  David has been fighting for the rights of the LGBTI community in Uganda.  Most recently David has been working with Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) and was the visible voice against the oppressive proposed legislation introduced by the Ugandan government, which would impose the death penalty for those found guilty of being gay.  David was brutally beaten to death in his home on 26 January 2011.

We mourn with his friends and family in Uganda.  We mourn with his colleagues at SMUG and Other Sheep.  We mourn with all those still struggling for Human Rights in Uganda, all of Africa and around the world.

This Sunday, we ask that our churches worldwide join with Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson and the Senior Leadership Team of MCC to take a moment and lift up David Kato, his family, friends and the ongoing struggle in Uganda in prayer.  We also ask you to lift up all of our people and congregations in Africa as they continue the struggle for human rights.  Fredrick Douglas said in the mid 1800s, after escaping from slavery, "Until we are all free, we are none free."

Gracious Loving God,

We lift to you our brother David so brutally taken from the world.

We ask for your healing, loving Spirit of peace to surround his family and friends.

May his death inspire those who would do harm to become peacemakers and people of justice.

May our churches in Africa find renewed strength and hope in the knowledge of your love and promise.

We pray for all those living in fear, for those with the power to bring about life-giving change and for those who courageously risk it all to say "Enough!"

God, help us to never become complacent but to remember those words from so long ago, "Until we are all free, we are none free."

We ask this through your many names and through Christ,

Amen.

Rev. Elder Diane Fisher

The Global Justice Team invites you to participate in a conference call with Val Kalende, Ugandan LGBT Rights Activist and Co-Founder of the LGBT Movement in Uganda.

Val helped to start the only lesbian organization in Uganda and has been at the frontline of the campaign against the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, legislation that proposed the death penalty for LGBT people in Uganda.  She is a former journalist who lost her job because of her outspoken stance on LGBT rights, and she was once jailed for campaigning for the recognition of sexual minorities in her country's National HIV/AIDS Policy.  Val will be addressing the LGBT Rights Struggle in Uganda, especially in light of the recent death of her personal friend and colleague, David Kato, another Co-Founder of the LGBT Movement in Uganda.

Currently, Val is pursuing a Master of Arts in Theological Studies at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Recently speaking at the Sunshine Cathedral Speaker Series program, Val said, "if change is to come in Uganda, it must come through church."  Metropolitan Community Churches stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Uganda in helping to bring about the

Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin

needed change.

The conference call will take place on Thursday, 3 February 2011, at 7:00 PM ET. Please dial 1.218.936.4141 and enter Participant Access Code: 33315. Questions about the call or interview should be directed to Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin at 1.954.462.2004 ext. 206 or via email at Rogertg@aol.com.

As it says in Mark 12:42-44: A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. "Our Souls Say 'YES!' " Celebrating The Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2011

Metropolitan Community Churches
Tearing Down Walls.  Building Up Hope.

Rhythm of Justice...

"Our Souls Say 'YES!' "

Celebrating The Birthday of

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2011

From the Desk of Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson,
Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches

wilson_nWe live in such powerful, challenging times! In the U.S., violence stalks our leaders, judges and members of Congress, children seeking just to learn and senior citizens wanting their voices to be heard. Metropolitan Community Churches everywhere are challenged to align ourselves with the spirituality and lifestyle of non-violence so passionately lived and articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is ironic that the U.S. state of Arizona was a hold-out for celebrating this now federally recognized holiday so long ago. In this time of fear, dangerously violent rhetoric and tensions around immigration and so many other important issues, it is Arizona that is the focal point of violence this week.

This is not a need in Arizona alone but every state in the US, and every region of the world. From Tucson to Kandahar, from Uganda to New Orleans, we need the courage, the faith in each other, the kind of perseverance in peace and justice that defined Dr. King's crusade, life and ministry.

I want to invite all of you to join me, in prayer if not in person, in an historic and unique celebration in Charlotte, North Carolina this coming weekend. I will be there to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Unity Fellowship Church in Charlotte, with their pastor, Bishop Tonyia Rawls. Joining me will be Archbishop Carl Bean, Founder of the Unity Fellowship Church Movement; Bishop Yvette Flunder, Founder of The Fellowship; Dr. Juan Battle, of the Graduate Center of City University of New York; and our own Stan Kimer, the new President of the North Carolina Council of Churches. We will be learning and worshipping, and becoming community together, for peace and justice, in this critical time in our country and world.

During weekend, President Stan Kimer will welcome Unity Fellowship Church of Charlotte, officially, as full members of the North Carolina Council of Churches, joining MCC churches who already belong. This is an historic first, and a cause for great celebration. It is another way to express our unity and solidarity as brothers and sisters in Christ with a common mission and passion for inclusion.

This gathering is a prelude to our upcoming People of African Descent Conference, later this year, in May, where we will gather a coalition of organizations in making our presence felt and our voice heard for justice and non-violence, in the U.S. capitol. Rev. Elder Darlene Garner, PAD Conference Convener, says, "at no other time in recent history has our presence and message been so vital to the spiritual and political well-being of our nation and world: what kind of a country, what kind of a world will we leave as our legacy?"

MCC, in solidarity with so many others, we are the keepers of an amazing dream that must not die! MCC was born in the year Dr. King died, and the choice is ours to keep hope Yes!alive, to speak up for peace, for non-violence, and for the kind of inclusive justice that will heal our world. Dr. King's memory does not belong to this nation or to one community alone, but to anyone who will offer their gifts and lives to that vision.

I ask every MCC congregation, this weekend, in some way, to be in solidarity with those in your community who need justice, hope or peace, in your worship and in your service; and to pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit as we gather in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Nancy Wilson
