Theologies Team Invites You to Participate in Survey

Since our first meeting in December 2007, we have been working on a number of projects that support our vision of equipping everyone in MCC to be both reflective and practical theologians.

Descriptive Theologies Project

We're excited to announce the launch of our new Descriptive Theologies project, designed with three goals in mind:

1.     To provide an accurate picture of practices "on the ground" in our churches around the world;

2.     To facilitate our understanding of who we are as a denomination/movement; and,

3.     To help us identify areas where the MCC Theologies Team may assist our churches.

Friend? Member? Clergy? Board Member? Elder?
We want to hear from you!

Our goal is to survey as widely as possible, soliciting responses from every individual associated with MCC in any way. Our short questionnaire has three sections for you to describe your experiences around baptism, to tell us what you were taught, and to tell us about your current beliefs around this important topic.

Continuing on work begun at the 2007 General Conference in Phoenix and the Holy Conversations congregational resource, we've designed our first surveys around the Sacrament of Baptism. Visit the survey page, and choose the Baptism survey for individuals.

The password for the survey is Baptism2011.

It is case sensitive, so make sure to use a capital B and lowercase letters for the rest.

Senior Leadership Team Report

In August, the SLT met at Dayspring Episcopal Conference Center, near Sarasota, Florida. In addition to our regular meeting agenda, our time together included a dinner with the Governing Board, worship and prayer, and time to connect with other staff and leaders. The SLT feels that "a new level of collaboration" really describes our work with each other, as well as the open and honest meeting with the Governing Board.

Highlights from the meeting are:

  • We set new, revised 2012 goals based on the Governing Board's priorities:
    • Have enough competent Pastors and lay leaders to meet our emerging needs in congregations:
      • Increase by 20% the number of competent qualified senior/solo Pastors
      • Enroll at least 75 people in the L.E.A.D. program
    • Have successfully engaged the emerging young adult movement at a structural/institutional level so that they can shift the MCC culture
    • Develop a clear brand position for the MCC brand
    • Create and maintain relevant, user-friendly internal and external MCC websites and other communication vehicles worthy of a program-sized denomination and of which we can be proud
  • 2012 will be the year of focusing on "pastoral excellence" and on those with a call to local church leadership
  • We met for the first time with the Governing Board, led by consultant Dan Hotchkiss. During this meeting, we mutually reviewed our accomplishments, roles and relationships, and we set some new year's resolutions
  • We reviewed our SLT accomplishments since mid-2010 (click here)
  • We were briefed about the Young Adult Retreat by staff and participants. We added "Young Adult Advocacy" to Jennifer Justice's job description, and we thanked Jennifer and Carlos Chavez for their outstanding work in resourcing the Young Adults who organized the retreat (click here). We committed to working on ways to keep improving Young Adult programming, access and visibility in the coming year
  • We share great excitement about the LEAD retreat and the upcoming Young Adult Leadership Mentoring Retreat in October of 2011
  • We anticipate the hiring of the new OFLD staff and the new communications strategy this month

We hope you will continue to keep us in prayer as we develop and implement the concrete plans to live into our goals!

LEAD 2011 class

These lay people from across North America met in Ellenton, Florida, for four days at the first L.E.A.D. Retreat, where they learned more about the program, the current and future role of laity in MCC, and their individual spiritual journeys. By the end of the weekend, each participant had created an "Action Plan" to better equip themselves as lay leaders, not only in their local church, but in the denomination at large. Each participant will work with one of the co-coordinators and their local church pastor to bring their plan to life.

Guest presenters for the weekend were Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Rev. Don Eastman, Rev. Dr. Mona West, Doug Berger (one of the L.E.A.D. program designers), Nancy Maxwell, and Barry Hundley. Bryan Parker, another program designer, was also present for part of the weekend.

The next L.E.A.D. retreat (which is required of all participants) is tentatively scheduled for February 17-20, 2012 (Friday through Monday), and plans are already underway for L.E.A.D retreats outside of North America.

If you would like to know more about the program and how you can apply to be in the next class, please reach out to one of the co-coordinators, Nancy Maxwell (nancy.maxwell@washburnedu.com) or Barry Hundley (barhun@aol.com).

Please keep these lay people in your prayers as they journey to be better leaders and work toward certificate completion.

Your Partners in Christ's Work,

Nancy Maxwell and Barry Hundley

Prayers for Texas in this
Historic Wildfire Season

The numbers are staggering. 251 of Texas' 254 counties have burn bans in effect. Six of the ten largest wildfires in Texas history occurred in 2011. Total acres burned in Texas this season: 3.6 million, which is half of all land burned in the U. S. this year. This makes 2011 the worst year on record for wildfires in Texas, nearly doubling the previous record.

Please join Rev. Elder Diane Fisher and the Office of Outreach in prayer:

God of Hope and Promise,

In a hurting world, we lift to you all those who are struggling.

Our earth is aching and groaning with the devastation

Of drought and flooding, hurricanes and tornadoes,

And mud slides and fires.

Forests have been lost to flames and winds.

Rivers have dried up...and rushed over their banks.

Beaches have eroded...and been built up.

We feel the earth's pain.

We feel the pain of the people fleeing the drought and the fires

And lift them up at this moment.

Please surround all those in danger's path with your presence.

Keep them safe, and bring the rains to a stricken land.

Protect the homes in the path of the fires.

Protect the animals and birds from the heat of the flames.

God, we know that all things are possible through you, and

We place in your care, our earth and our lives.

Through your many names,

And Jesus, the Christ, we offer this prayer.

Amen

Participant Comments

Below are comments about the L.E.A.D. retreat from some of the first 12 participants:

The L.E.A.D. retreat was spiritually and educationally rewarding, and I felt in touch with the Holy Spirit.
The morning and evening reflections were powerful - spiritually led and from the heart. The fellowship was awesome, connecting with other MCCers from Canada, Florida, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas and Atlanta, getting to know each other and bonding in such a short time. It was a wonderful journey in my life.
Kevin - MCC Omaha

The L.E.A.D. retreat weekend was for me a life-changing event. I feel I was given tools that will make me a more effective leader. I was challenged to be authentic, and the result was an unleashed joy - a joy that came from only scratching the surface of what my true potential can be in our fellowship. I have a long way to go on this journey, but I now have other travelers on it with me in varying degrees. Thank you for all the love and new brothers and sisters in Christ!
Jackie - First Coast MCC

The L.E.A.D. program and retreat is exceeding all my expectations. I am inspired to know the UFMCC is
fully committed to raising up an army of organized and empowered laity to serve our mission of reaching a hurting and needy world! Arm in arm with ordained leaders, we will be the hands and feet of Jesus!
Geoff - Church of the Trinity MCC
