Hoy 你好 こんにちは xin chào May Is Asian Pacific Island Heritage Month! The LGBT Christian movement is growing as fast in Asia and the Pacific as anywhere in the world today. MCC's Asia Pacific Initiative makes it possible for MCC's message of God's inclusive love and a progressive understanding of the gospel to be a major voice in shaping the future of this movement. Interest in MCC increases daily all over the Asian Pacific world and API is dedicated to supporting our existing faith communities there and being present for those who are desperate to hear our liberating message. As we celebrate Asian Pacific Island Heritage Month in the US, we lift up MCC's Asian Pacific Initiative. | Why Celebrate Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month? We join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success. May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island). Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. | MCC Asian Pacific Island Leaders Rev. Elder Hong Tan The Rev. Hong K. Litany: Here We Are On The Edge
We are here. Dancing on the edge. The edge of the Pacific Rim, the ring of fire. The dangerous and delightful edge of spirituality and sexuality.
Here we will be. Living out loud. Loving out loud. Worshiping out loud. All the while knowing the danger of loving each other and the Christ.
Here we will not be. Silent. Afraid. Alone. Invisible. Nameless. Faithless. For we have strength by being in relation -ship with each other, with MCC and with the Divine.
Here we will sing the song of liberation. Here we will dance the dance of whole - ness. Here we will laugh the joy of salvation. Here we will drink and eat at Table, as our true selves.
Here we are. On the edge. It is ours to fill to over -flowing. With Passion. With Hope. With the Love of God through Christ and in Communion with Spirit. The Holy edge.
Here we are!
Amen.
