This Week at MCC of Corpus Christi

February 20, 2007

Good morning!

Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the season known as Lent-a season of 40 days of reflection. We encourage everyone to reflect on their lives, and to meditate on ways we can all become more intentional about our Christian discipleship.

One way we can become more intentional about our Christian discipleship is to become more active in the life of our community of faith. So as we so often say in this newsletter, "Read on, get involved, and be blessed!"

25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Our 25th Anniversary was absolutely fabulous! The "Aces" (the Chorale portion of the Alamo City Men's Chorus) wowed the crowd , the food was great, and the fellowship superb! Rev. Dr. Cindi Love preached a very informative and inspirational sermon on Sunday on "Tearing Down Walls: Building Up Hope," and followed that with a wonderful workshop on UFMCC resourcing that is available to us for increasing awareness of our church in the community. Thanks to everyone who had a part in making our 25th Anniversary an event to remember!

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE
Our traditional Ash Wednesday service will be held TODAY, February 21st at 7:00PM. Please make plans to attend this service that marks the beginning of the reflective season of Lent.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR JAN OTTO
The memorial service for MCC of CC founding member and sister in Christ, Jan Otto, will be held this Saturday, February 24th, at 10AM at MCC of CC, to be followed by a potluck lunch. If you are able to help with the potluck, please contact Mary Jo Smith and Diane Creson.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING CALLED FOR FEBRUARY 25TH, 2007
A Congregational Meeting has been called for Sunday, February 25th, 2007 at 12:30PM. The purpose of this meeting is to vote on a proposal to purchase the property located at 501 South Staples Street to be used as our next church home.

During the month of February, we are planning to host 1 more open house so members and friends may have a chance to view the property. The final Open House will be held Saturday, February 24th from 2-4PM. Please note the change in the time. After a brief social time on Sunday February 25th, we will hold the Congregational Meeting at 12:30PM.

The pastor has called our community to a time of prayer as we discern the future forward movement and direction of our community of faith. We encourage you to attend the open house, and especially the congregational meeting.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY RETURNS
Join us for Bible Study Wednesday, February 28th, beginning at 6:30PM in the Community Board Room of the church. Pastor Danny plans to lead a Lenten-themed study over the next 6 weeks. All are welcome!

TORTILLA HEAVEN COMING TO CORPUS CHRISTI
Grace Church and Vicarious Productions present "Tortilla Heaven" performed by Jade Esteban Estrada here in Corpus Christi on March 31st at 7:30pm at 1315 Craig Street. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. You can email TortillaHeavenCC@aol.com for ticket information or contact Brian Moore at 658-2084.

"Tortilla Heaven" is a play based on family and tradition, and sheds a comedic light on the struggle that many second and third generation Mexican Americans go through with trying to hold on to their culture.
Each character has their own unique struggle with trying to find the balance between assimilation into the American culture while still holding true to the roots, culture, language and ultimately themselves. Estrada plays seven characters in the bilingual play in order to show the different types of people and personalities that make up a traditional Mexican family in today's society.
