Summary from the Recent MCC Senior Leadership Team and Governing Board Meetings

The Senior Leadership Team and Governing Board met for the first time together in Florida, in conjunction with their own meetings, facilitated by Alban Institute's Dan Hotchkiss, who has been a consultant to the Governing Board and Moderator over the last year.

The joint meeting included an 18-month review of the accomplishments of the Senior Leadership Team (link to long list, or find a way to share this!) and Governing Board progress on the Open Questions. The SLT also offered our 2012 plan for ministry, building on our progress this year.

We evaluated the Senior Leadership Team and Governing Board relationship and mutual accountability through the Moderator and made four New Year's Resolutions:

  • We will clarify board and staff boundary expectations where they are still unclear.
  • The Governing Board will develop a response plan for concerns that is timely and clear.
  • We will make sure staff is informed about Board policies.
  • The Governing Board commited to complete Development philosophy and policy to facilitate progress with the MCC Office of Development.

The Governing Board elected officers for the year:

  • Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin: Vice-Chair
  • Liz Bisordi: Treasurer
  • Bryan Parker: Secretary

In addition, the Board reviewed committee assignments (which will be posted in the minutes and on the GB web page this month).

Some of the highlights of the Governing Board accomplishments are:

  • Set new Vision Goals and Open Questions (see below).
  • Began creating a development philosophy and set key goals and concrete plans with staff.
  • Received the preliminary draft reports of the International Task Force, referred some of their research and proposals, as appropriate, to the staff. The board offered feedback to take back to the ITF Steering Committee meeting in September in Toronto. We are grateful for their commitment and work!
  • Received a report from the Young Adult Retreat and will be following up on those recommendations. Many thanks to all those in young adult leadership for this important step!
  • Created a Strategic Planning Committee that will work with the SLT on a five-year plan with yearly goals and review and use an outside consultant.
  • Created an ad hoc policy team to work on revenue streams in addition to tithes and will ask the Senior Leadership Team to develop a business plan to bring to the board for action in the next quarter.
  • Affirmed staff actions in instituting additional efficiencies and cuts to close the 2011 budget gap created by the downturn in tithe income, short of cutting staff.
  • The Board took action addressing the "temporary" cuts in staff salaries that have been in effect for nearly four years, working on restoration over the next 2 years. In addition, work on executive compensation and succession planning is on our radar.
  • The Board made motions thanking Judy and Rev. Dee Dale for their decades of ministry and service to MCC; and thanking Carlos Chavez and Jennifer Justice for their excellent efforts in support for the Young Adult Retreat at Sunshine Cathedral MCC in July; and appreciation for our 2011 officers, Rev. Tony Freeman, Rev. Dr. Candace Shultis and Liz Bisordi as they took on the tasks and learning curve of our first year.

After reviewing the work of the Senior Leadership Team, with gratitude, the Board set the following Vision Goals for 2012, after input from the SLT:

  •  Build leadership development into all we do, particularly with young adults.

The Governing Board was impressed by the ways in which the SLT has taken this to heart and is providing high quality leadership development for laity and clergy with new focus and intensity, and we believe this continues to be our greatest need!

  • Communicate to the world with passion and clarity who we are - and that 'we want to know you'!

The Governing Board looks forward to the new strategy for communications that will take shape this year

  • Give priority to churches that demonstrate signs of health and growth.

The Governing Board supports the SLT and Church Life and Health emphasis on focusing our limited resources on churches that want to move in this direction

Our Open Questions for 2012 are:

  • What is our vision for funding ministry?
  • How can our young adults help us to imagine and articulate a future for MCC?
  • What is needed to enhance our global ministry and structure?

Rev. Dr. Elder Nancy Wilson Explains Her New Roles within the MCC Office of the Moderator

Nancy 200px

As Moderator of MCC, my job description changed quite a bit in the new structure, and it is challenging and wonderful to work in a system that is clearer. It has been a joy to see my new role come alive at the joint meeting of the Senior Leadership Team and the Governing Board last week! Coming from the Young Adult retreat right into our leadership meetings was so important for me - I could see the part of my job that is about encouraging and mentoring new leaders, as well as the part that is about making good decisions now to prepare for the future!

The scope of the Moderator's Office is as follows:

  • Serves as the Chief Pastor and spiritual leader of MCC
  • Moderates the Business Meeting of General Conference
  • Leads and Supervises the Senior Leadership Team and is the Head of staff for MCC globally
  • Leads and Moderates the Governing Board, the elected fiduciary body, and is the CEO of the corporation
  • Serves as the Chief Spokesperson for MCC and works closely with our Communications staff, our Global Justice Institute and Public Policy Team to articulate MCC's message globally.
  • Initiates and Manages partnerships that enhance MCC's ministry, in cooperation with other MCC Offices.
